Introducing FloorScore Certification

FloorScore is the leading indoor air quality (IAQ) certification standard for flooring materials, adhesives, and underlayments. FloorScore was developed by SCS in collaboration with the RFCI Institute, a leading industry trade association of flooring manufacturers and suppliers. FloorScore qualifies for many green building programs such as LEED v4.1, WELL, BREEAM, CHPS, and Green Globes.

Introducing FloorScore Certification Organization

The FloorScore program is administered by RFCI, with SCS as the exclusive certifying agent. SCS partners with independent, ISO-17025 accredited laboratories around the world to ensure efficient and objective testing. SCS tests representative product samples and strictly focuses on the relevant chemicals being tested.

Information on VOC assessed substances

According to the EPA, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are gases emitted from certain solid or liquid materials that can cause adverse health effects at high concentrations. VOC concentrations in enclosed spaces such as indoors are often 10 times higher than in outdoor environments. VOCs can cause health problems such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, and even respiratory problems with long-term exposure.

The reason VOCs need to be used in many products on the market, especially laminate flooring and SPC flooring, is because they contribute to industrial manufacturing processes, helping to increase the durability and functionality of the material.

Therefore, FloorScore certification helps consumers easily identify and choose products with low VOC emission levels within the permitted standard, ensuring health safety.

FloorScore will test for 35 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) per CA Section 01350 , ensuring indoor air quality.

For EDGE certification, buildings must meet the Embodied Energy in Materials criteria, prioritizing the use of low-emission materials and low energy consumption during production. Therefore, FloorScore can indirectly support buildings to achieve EDGE certification if the flooring materials meet the low-emission requirements.

For users

FloorScore ensures that the product has low VOC emissions, making it safe for users, especially children, the elderly and those with sensitive respiratory systems.

How are Floordi laminate flooring and SPC flooring certified?

Floordi laminate flooring and SPC flooring undergo the following evaluation process:

  • Review product ingredients
  • Check documents at the manufacturing facility
  • Factory inspection
  • Product Emission Testing

Step 1: Floordi submits an application. SCS evaluates the project, providing a detailed proposal on process, cost and timeline.

Step 2: The auditor works with Floordi to collect product data and quality management documents, then schedules an on-site inspection.

Step 3: SCS auditors inspect Floordi's operations, collect information, and take samples of laminate flooring and SPC vinyl flooring for testing.

Step 4: Laminate and SPC flooring samples are sent to an independent SCS approved laboratory for emissions testing according to California Standard 01350, which takes approximately 3-4 weeks.

Step 5: The auditor issues a report on the results of the inspection and evaluation.

Step 6: SCS reviews the final report for compliance and makes a decision and issues certification.
